Integrating Computer Resources into an Engaging Earth Science Curriculum

About the Author

Overview:

These morning sessions are designed to offer you technical support for your WESI projects as well as skills and insight on how networked computers can play a role enhancing your science curriculum.  By working in collaborative problem solving teams we will be modeling the most effective practice of technology integration (according to current consensus of the larger Ed-Tech community).

We will spend our time on Windows based PC's.  There are several powerful geological programs that are designed only for Windows, however, the main programs we will use for the purpose of internet browsing, image processing and spreadsheets are employed identically on Macintosh.

The activities are divided into seven Modules.  We will proceed through them at a pace that should give you plenty of time to explore.

Overriding Goals:

...to provide time and support for you to create on-line curriculum formatted as a(n) annotated hot list, curriculum page or a learning module (e.g. 1, 2, 3,4)...

...to introduce and/or practice basic desktop and internet skills such as file management, using bookmarks, use of search engines and navigation...

...to explore the potential of images as data and the power of image processing as scientific exploration and analysis...

...to access useful data from the internet and practice graph making and analysis in spreadsheet programs...

...to consider strategies and implications for technology integration...(progressive models)

Module One:  Logging On to the SMATE network

Module Two:   Desktop Basics

Module Three: Curricular Resources

Module Four:  Technology in Science Curricula

Module Five:  Visual Literacy: The Power of Images
