Instructional Software for Science

Portrait USA: a CD-rom that overlays numerous geophysical and geographical data sets on a shaded topographic base (DEM). From the CD, the program can be downloaded to a file server and networked, or from a cd drive.  Unfortunately, the non-profit consortium that build this program (and GNA below) has disbanded as their grant ran dry.  Portrait USA is being re-writen by a group called the American Geophysical Institute (AGI).  In the Fall (1999) they entend to release version 2.  Their original web site had extensive information such as an on-line manual, basic geophysics, updates and more.  I expect to see that in the future.

Joint Education Initiative JEI 3 CD-ROM set: Contains numerous earth science data sets as well as several interactive programs that allow manipulation and displaying. The strongest program is Geophysics of North America which overlays numerous geophysical and geographical data sets over colored topographic contours. Portrait USA is a user friendly upgrade that incorporates a DEM of the USA, but GNA has color contoured maps of gravity and magnetics.

Geophysics of North America:  is available as a stand alone CD from the National Geophysical Data Center.  Since JEI is disbanded, this may be the only way to get it.  See ordering information below.

ISMCS Weather Data on CD-rom: This program starts with a global interactive map that allows zooming and mouse selection of over 6000 weather stations. 2600 of the stations have very detailed summaries. Tabular or statistical data can be exported to a printer or spreadsheet. Version 4.0 allows users to graph selected tables. Cost is $130.

Seismic Software of Alan Jones, See: http://www.geol.binghamton.edu/faculty/jones/jones.html

Seismic/Eruption: An interactive Windows based program that has an extensive database of earthquake and volcanic events. A number of pre-formed maps are included which illustrate the seismicity and volcanic events in various parts of the earth. Some views include cross sections and 3-D views. These are effective at conveying the nature of convergent and transform plate boundaries. A user can make their own maps of areas they may be interested in. This version is a new windows upgrade of previous versions. Expect future upgrades to continue.

Seismic Waves: This is a windows program that illustrates how seismic waves propagate from an earthquake hypocenter to seismic stations throughout the earth. One sees waves propagating out from the epicenter on a three-dimensional view of the earth at the same time one sees waves propagating through a cross-sectional view of the earth. These two wave propagation views are synchronized with actual event waveforms so that as a particular phase arrives at a station, one sees the effect on the seismiogram. The user may choose various views, select from many types of seismic waves.

Ordering Information:

Both programs can be down loaded directly over the internet directly from Jones' web page (http://www.geol.binghamton.edu/faculty/jones/jones.html).

These Programs are FREE to all users!

Geologic Hazards Photos CD-rom: Geologic Hazard Photos CD-ROM Data Retrieval NOAA'S National Geophysical Data Center. Photographs of damage caused by natural hazards represent a unique form of data that capture the transient consequences of Earth's periodic upheavals. To optimize access, download the contents on a file server and view them with the program L-View in *.PCX format.

3-DEM Viewer:  (for Windows) This is a free viewer for Digital Elevation Models (DEM).  It was created by the USGS to view DEM's in USGS format.

Scion Image (for Windows) or NIH Image (for Mac's) These programs were designed for medical imaging and are now available free to schools. The are capable of image processing and are applied in curriculum for biology as well as remote sensing.

I-View (for Windows) or Graphic's Converter (for Mac's):  These are user friendly all purpose image manipulators, simple animators and graphic format converters. These links connect you to the JPL (Jet Prop. Lab) Software Archive site.  There are dozens of products that can be downloaded from this page.
