During the 1999-2000 academic year visiting technology
specialist, Mike Gallagher
is assisting the geology faculty in their efforts to integrate instructional
technology throughout their undergraduate program. Discussions and
surveys have set the following priorities:
-
promote the skill set and address the networking logistics
required to use network based interactive programs and images in the lecture
settings,
-
promote the integration of interactive computer software
in the lab setting of introductory courses,
-
design and offer a series of hands-on workshops for faculty
to develop technology skills,
-
enhance web support for introductory courses and interested
faculty,
-
develop technology enhanced curriculum for select upper level
courses,
-
using NOAA's weather data disc
-
using computer based imaging in geomorphology
-
using Geophysics of North America CD in geophysics
-
using various structural geology software in Structure and
introductory courses
- creating animation's of terrane migrations and plate models
-
creating curriculum with hydrology modeling software
- integrating GIS software into environmental curriculum
-
creating MPEG's of petrographic images.
-
assist in the development in some far reaching projects coordinated
with interested faculty.
-
creating virtual hikes
-
perusing grants for distributed seismographs

Technology Workshops for Geology
November 4: Handling Images for Lectures and Projects
Using the Image Viewer and Slide
Show Maker: I-View, explore our Geologic Hazards Image Gallery.
-
become familiar with the contents and organization of the Image Gallery
available on the Geology file server,
-
create slide shows that can be accessed reliably and with ease in any lecture
hall,
-
contribute to the Gallery with images you download from the web or scan
from your personal collection.
-
The goal of this workshop is for you to create a slide show that you can
use in the near future, so come with a project in mind.
Technology Workshops for Geology
November 18: Using Interactive Software for Image
Creation and Exploring Geologic Concepts
Get familiar with Seismic Eruption,
Seismic Waves and Geophysics of North America
-
learn how these software can be run in any lecture hall,
-
become fluent with the interactive elements of this software,
-
learn how to extract tailored images and save into our image gallery.
Technology Workshops for Geology
December 2: Introduction to Geographic Information
Systems (GIS)
Experience GIs in order to comprehend
its enormous potential
- interact with an Arcview GIs project that overlays campus geology, buildings,
topography and roads,
- learn of the basic file structure used in a GIs,
-
assemble your own project using county based data.
Technology Workshops
for Geology
January 26: Introduction to Blackboard
as a Web Template
Explore the potential
of template-based web authoring:
- consider some examples
of network enhanced curricular options using the web and interactive software,
- develop your course by uploading documents, images and software,
- enhance your course with electronic discussion boards, on-line student
drop-off and more.
Technology Workshops for Geology
February 9: Integrating Mapping Software
(GLG-map)
Experience GLG-map
for interpreting the surface expression of stratigraphy
- manipulate block diagrams with various stratigraphic scenarios,
- use the 3 point calculator,
- consider how to use in this tool in a topographic
map lab in geology 101,
- manually create an image in raster format (a fundamental GIS concept).
Technology Workshops
for Geology
March 1: Easy access to DEM's
Display
digital landscapes with DEM-3D viewer
- Display and manipulate any USGS 1:24,000 or 1:250,000 DEM, (on your
PC) using the software: DEM 3-d,
- learn the basics of Raster based images,
- practice downloading and unzipping DEM's found on the web,
- gain more familiarity with collected resources.
Technology Workshops
for Geology
March 15, April 18, May 2: Enhanced skills in GIS
Understanding file structure
and display options in Arcview
- gain more experience with the file structure of GIS
- assemble projects using collected resources on the geology file server
- tailor your map to meet your needs.
