Options
Options for careers in
science education appear obvious, but if you only look at the obvious you
may miss some excellent opportunities.
Public schools seek qualified
applicants to teach science at all levels, from kindergarten through grade
twelve. Private schools, forgotten by some applicants, offer the same
opportunities. Many other organizations, such as the Pacific Science Center,
zoological parks, National and State Parks, etc., seek candidates knowledgeable
in science as well as its communication. And don’t forget colleges and
universities. Teaching at the college level will almost always require and
advanced degree, usually a doctorate at the four-year college or university
level. That doctorate may be in a scientific discipline (to teach science), or
in Education (to teach teaching). (Western’s Science Education faculty are
“cross-trained.” Those in the natural science departments have doctorates in
science and teacher certification/training. Those in the education departments
have doctorates in education and extensive study of science.)
